Buy Local : Tuttle Farms

My family has been to Tuttle Orchards a few times now. I'll have to admit, I'm gonna be biased in this blog based on location alone. You'll read about places close to my home before I venture all the way around the city dragging two impatient kids that apparently belong to me. But I'll get to those places in due time wherever they are.

Tuttle Orchards is located in Greenfield which is East-Northeast of the circle. It is Mapquested here.

Many apples are in season right now and ready to be picked (by You!). And some others will be ripe in the next couple of weeks. And yet other will ripen in mid October. They grow 22 varieties of apples available at various times. Ah heck, here is the harvest schedule for 2009. What's your flavor??

Just remember it's not only apples. Pumpkins show up in October as well. There are also a variety of other vegetables in the stands throughout the year. And even a play area, an agrimaze , and of course hay rides. Not to mention the bees. Go check it out. Go buy a bushel of apples grown right here in Indiana. They say it tastes better .

Hoosier Outdoor Experience at Fort Harrision Park

A large event is being planned for Fort Harrison State Park for the weekend of September 26-27th. The event features a plethora of information, hands on activities, speakers, and downright fun all involving the "great outdoors". For two days this FREE event will saturate the participants with realtime opportunities to learn various outdoor experiences.

This includes hiking, biking, camping, air gun shooting, archery, archeology digs, birding, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, wildlife researching, forestry management, and seriously so much more. I imagine it will be wonder to experience it all. I am very excited about this event as I feel much of our youth today have not had the chance to get connected with the outdoors.

As I said the event is free, but you do need to register. Don't worry, registering is free also. If you have any inclination towards the outdoors, then sign up and go to the event. It should be a very good time. See you there. You can find all the pertinent information on the link below.

Recycle Reuse Guide - courtesy of KIB

I have linked the KIB (Keeping Indianapolis Beautiful) Recycle Reuse Guide on the right hand tab. It is a very useful guide to recycling or reusing various materials. You might be surprised to know that materials you thought were junk can be reused in multiple ways. Either way, take a look and see what you can recycle and where you can do it.

Paperboard, what to do???

First order of business, I need to know what to do with the copious amounts of paperboard our family accumulates. Everything we buy from peanut clusters to fruit gushers and everything inbetween seems to come in paperboard. I'm guessing we could reduce the amount of waste significantly by recycling our paperboard. Easy enough, but...........

NOBODY RECYCLES IT.

or do they??

Here is where I'll post any relevant information regarding paperboard because issues, policy, action, all change in time. Hopefully we'll see a broader avenue for better recycling throughout the city in years to come.

Anyway, there are a few places to recycle it, but I have been unable to verify them so far.

EDIT: I called Republic Services today (June 3rd-2009)and THEY DO NOT take paperboard at the Langsdale or Robinson Road locations, only corrugated cardboard. Republic Services is listed here as recycling paperboard at Sam's Club Parking lot, 3015 W. 86th St.; Broad Ripple Park, Evanston Street entrance. However there is no listing for these locations on the Republic Services website. I will have to visit these locations myself and see if they do in fact recycle paperboard and what the deal is.

See how confusing this is?? Shouldn't recycling be a bit more more seamless?? At least a bit easier?? I'll keep on it, but it looks to be no easy task. Below are a few places I've found that will take your paperboard. Rock-Tenn also takes plastics 1-7.

Why IndyEarth??

What is IndyEarth??

In short, IndyEarth is about the small piece of Earth we have right here in Indiana and advocating for personal responsibility in taking care of it. This covers a lot of topics which is a good thing because I have such a variety of interests. You could expect to read about local recycling, waste and energy reduction, hiking, outdoor events, parks, recreation,
biking, local gardening, and stargazing. Or a number of other topics. It just depends on what mood I'm in. Either way I hope to offer you something of value or interest. Then again perhaps I'll just show you pictures of the things my cat drags in. It's usually interesting at least.
